About Joseph H. Pettus

Joseph H. Pettus is senior vice president of fuel and energy for Safeway Inc., and is responsible for the management of all electricity and natural gas operations. Safeway is one of the top 10 corporate purchasers of renewable green energy in the nation, according to the EPA Green Energy Partnership. All green and sustainability operations fall under Pettus’ guidance.

Pettus is also responsible for the operation of more than 400 Safeway fueling stations located throughout the U.S. and Canada, with annual revenues of approximately $5 billion.

Pettus graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder, in 1970 with degrees in civil engineering and business administration. He began his career with Exxon in Houston, later moving to Fluor Engineering, where he was assigned project management for the natural gas and gas liquids pipeline project in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Since then Pettus has been actively involved with refinery operations, trading on the NYMEX futures market, international liquid petroleum gas shipping, and petroleum products storage terminal operations. In 1989 he formed his own corporation, Sun Valley Energy, Inc., which specialized in the distribution and wholesale marketing of petroleum products in California. He joined the Safeway team in 2001 after Sun Valley was sold.
