Donald Paul is founder and president of Energy and Technology Strategies, LLC. Before starting his consulting firm, Paul was the vice president and chief technology officer for San Ramon, Calif.–based Chevron Corporation. He retired from Chevron in June 2008 after 33 years.
Paul’s major new responsibilities include recently announced appointments as senior advisor to the provost of the University of Southern California and senior advisor for the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C.
During his career with Chevron, he held a variety of positions in technology, exploration and production operations, and executive management, including president of Chevron’s Canadian subsidiary and president of the Energy Technology Company.
As chief technology officer, Paul was the line officer for Chevron’s three technology subsidiaries: Energy Technology, Information Technology and Technology Ventures. He also was the global compliance officer for information protection, security and data privacy. He was extensively involved in forming external research and technology partnerships for Chevron with major universities, national laboratories, governments and businesses. He developed and implemented Chevron’s strategy to build cooperative partnerships with U.S. government agencies and national laboratories in energy and transportation R&D, advanced computing and cyber-security for oil and gas.
Paul has participated in a number of public service roles. He served as a member of the National Research Council, the 1997 Presidential Panel on Federal Energy R&D and the 2007 landmark study by the National Petroleum Council for the Secretary of Energy.
He continues to serve on a number of university, government and industry advisory boards on energy and technology. He received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from MIT in applied mathematics, geology and geophysics.
