President and Publisher, Sacramento Bee

Janis Heaphy is president and publisher of The Sacramento Bee, the flagship newspaper of the McClatchy Company.  As the region’s leading media company, The Sacramento Bee publishes a daily newspaper and three premier local Web sites.

After earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Education from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, Heaphy taught English for two years before joining The Los Angeles Times. During more than 20 years at The Times, she rose through the management ranks to ultimately become Senior Vice President of Advertising and Marketing before joining The Bee in 1998.

Heaphy is the first publisher in the 150-year history of The Bee, overseeing the newsroom, editorial board, interactive media and business operations. During her nine-year tenure, she has solidified The Bee’s strong reputation for award-winning journalism, while also producing strong financial results. In fact, The Bee’s journalistic efforts were recognized in 2005 and in 2007 with the Pulitzer Prize, American journalism’s highest honor. The Bee has been awarded five Pulitzer Prize’s since the paper’s inception in 1857.

Heaphy is a respected leader in the community and was honored by the Greater Sacramento Urban League with the Ruth Standish Baldwin Award and as one of The Sacramento Business Journal’s “Women Who Mean Business” awardees.  Heaphy currently serves on the board of directors of Valley Vision, The Sacramento Region Community Foundation and on the Board of Trustees at Jesuit High School.  She also serves on the UC Davis Graduate School of Management Dean’s Advisory Council.
