Sacramento MBA Program – Waiver Exam Information
You may be exempted from the requirement to take certain core courses with the approval of the designated faculty member. Exemption, if granted, does not award course credit and you would take an additional elective to replace the exempted course.

Waiver exams for 202A and 203A will be offered at the Sacramento Education Building on Wednesday, September 10, from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. If you believe you are highly proficient, you must register for the waiver exam by Monday, September 1.
Course exemptions are generally by examination or may be granted at the instructor’s discretion based on previous coursework.
200A Financial Accounting
If you have a bachelors or masters degree in accounting and/or are a certified public accountant, you are automatically waived from taking the core Financial Accounting Course (200A). You should email Professor Michelle Yetman and summarize your relevant educational background or certification that qualifies you for the exemption. She will send an email to you and the GSM Registrar confirming your exemption.
If you don’t meet the above criteria and believe that you have a very good understanding of basic accounting principles, you must register to take the waiver exam. If you minored in accounting or have already taken a few financial accounting courses, you may attempt the waiver exam. Professor Yetman does not recommend waiving the course if you have had only one previous undergraduate financial accounting course, as beginning undergraduate accounting courses are typically taught with an emphasis towards bookkeeping, whereas this course is taught with an emphasis towards managerial decision making.
201B Organizational Strategy and Structure
This course covers strategic management of organizations, including: analysis of industries, firm resources and capabilities and corporate strategy; strategy formulation, implementation and strategic decision-making; firm and industry life cycles and change; and analysis of organizational design and structure including differentiation and integration. If you have had previous graduate level or advanced undergraduate courses covering this material, you may sign up to take the waiver exam for 201B.
202A Markets and the Firm (Microeconomics)
If you believe you are highly proficient in economics, you must register take the waiver exam for 202A.
203A Data Analysis for Managers (Statistics)
If you have an undergraduate or graduate degree in mathematics or statistics, you must e-mail Professor Roger Edelen so that he can verify that you are automatically waived from taking 203A. This course may also be waived if you have a degree in engineering, but Professor Edelen needs to make a case-by-case determination. You should e-mail Professor Roger Edelen and list the relevant educational background for possible exemption.
If you don’t meet the above criteria and believe you are highly proficient in statistics, you must register to take the waiver exam for 203A.
205 Financial Theory and Policy
If you have extensive coursework in finance, you can submit transcripts and syllabi from past finance courses to request exemption. You should contact Professor Brad Barber and list the relevant educational background and course for possible exemption.
If you don’t meet the above criteria and believe you are highly proficient in finance, you must register for the waiver exam. The 205 waiver exam will be offered in mid-February (registration for the exam will be in early January). Students are allowed to use calculators for this exam.
Waiver exams will NOT be offered for the following courses:
201A Individual and Group Dynamics
Examines basic psychological and social psychological processes shaping human behavior and applies knowledge of these processes to the practice of working with and managing others in organizations. Topics include motivation, job design, commitment, socialization, culture, individual and group decision making, and team building.
204 Marketing Management
The core marketing class offers concepts and methods required not only to perform well in other marketing courses, but also to develop general business understanding. You will learn new approaches, for example, to measure consumers’ preferences or effectiveness of marketing activities that are not available in normal textbooks or courses. These new skills you acquire will complement your prior knowledge and experience. Hence there is no waiver exam for this course. 252 Managing for Operational Excellence
Explores operations in manufacturing and service sectors from both inside and outside a company. Quantitative methods and their organizational implications are also examined.
268 Articulation and Critical Thinking
Develop competency in business writing and oral presentations. Build critical thinking skills. Topics include behavioral economics, false claims, deductive reasoning, correlation/causality, business ethics.
