With over 15 years’ experience in the wine industry, Ms. Crowe helped found Napa-based Plata Wine Partners to create wine brands with compelling stories backed by unparalleled quality. Crowe is the Director of Winemaking for Plata Wine Partners (formed in 2005) as well as Winemaker for Garnet Vineyards, a small cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay brand. Crowe sources her wines from within her company’s 10,000+ acres of premium North and Central Coast vineyards, literally growing her client’s projects from the ground up.

Her current vineyard and winemaking experience runs deep through the luxury appellations of California from the Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey County to the Russian River, Petaluma Gap, Oakville and Rutherford AVA’s on the North Coast. At Garnet Vineyards, she crafts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Sonoma Coast regions, sourcing from award-winning vineyard sites such as Stanly Ranch and Rodgers Creek. She recently oversaw the nationwide launch of Garnet Vineyards Monterey Pinot Noir in keg for by-the-glass “wine on tap” programs.

Crowe grew up in Santa Barbara and got her start in the cellars of Chalone Vineyard and Curtis Winery.  She made wine at Bonny Doon Vineyard, working side by side with visionary founder Randall Grahm, for almost five years, learning about a wide variety of grapes and winemaking styles. Then, in 2005, she immersed herself in a Spanish-language harvest at Bodegas Salentein in Mendoza, Argentina working with famed winemaker Michel Rolland. She served as a flavor and technique consultant, helping the winery with their export launch into the U.S. marketplace. Today at Plata Wine Partners and Garnet Vineyards, Crowe enjoys the “360-degree” view that comes with combining the vineyard, winemaking and creative sides of brand creation and management. Her projects, from nationally-distributed labels to hot startup brands, have earned multiple 90+ scores in Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and The Wine Advocate.

Crowe has degrees in Fermentation Science and Spanish as well as an MBA from UC Davis.  She is very active in the wine industry, with positions on the boards of the Carneros Wine Alliance, the Unified Grape & Wine Symposium and the UC Davis Department of Viticulture & Enology. She is a frequent contributor to Wine Business Monthly, is the author of The Winemaker’s Answer Book, and blogs at www.girlandthegrape.com.

She is a fourth-generation California native, comes from a farming family and lives with her family in downtown Napa. Learn more about Crowe’s wines and follow her throughout the winemaking year at www.garnetvineyards.com and www.girlandthegrape.com.

What opportunities, decisions, events have shaped your professional life?

My career path has been a climb across a jungle gym rather than a tangent up a corporate ladder. As a child, I used to thumb through the three-inch JCPenney catalogue, picking out the professional women who I would grow to be. I wanted to rule the world from a corner office in a suit and heels. I wanted to shed my humble origins and become Corporate Barbie.
