Big Bang! Rules & Tools

Participating in the Big Bang! is an educational experience that begins in October and ends in May.

Teams have the opportunity to attend Big Bang! workshops to develop and hone their business concept. Workshops are not required but encouraged.

All teams must register and submit deliverables through the YouNoodle platform by the appropriate deadlines. Team registration on the YouNoodle platform opens on December 1. We cannot accept emailed submissions.

Team Registration

The online YouNoodle  platform will be used for all competition submissions and judging.

  • Early team registration opens on December 1, 2016. Sign up by 11:59 p.m. on December 1 for the potential for increased mentoring support. Institute staff will seek a mentor to match with each idea submitted by December 1.
  • Early registration for feedback on executive summary (optional Round 1 early deadline): January 23, 2017 by 11:59 p.m.
  • Final deadline for team registration (Round 1 deadline): February 23, 2017, by 11:59 p.m.

Round 1: Executive Summary / Team Member Biographies

Submit a two-page Executive Summary and a one-page Team Member Biography (for each team member) to YouNoodle.

Round 1 materials submitted by the optional Round 1 Early Deadline (January 23) will receive from constructive feedback from by expert reviewers in our network no later than February 10. Participants will have the opportunity to incorporate reviewer feedback into their submission before the Round 1 deadline (February 23). This preliminary part of Round 1 is non-elimination.

Round 1 Early Deadline (Optional): Register and submit team bios and draft Executive Summary by January 23, 2017, by 11:59 p.m. to receive preliminary feedback from expert reviewers.

Round 1 Deadline: Register and submit team bios and draft Executive Summary by February 23, 2017, by 11:59 p.m. Those teams who submitted Round 1 materials by the early deadline should update and resubmit materials, incorporating reviewer feedback as appropriate.

Submissions received after the deadline will not be accepted. This is a required submission to advance to the next round. This is an elimination round.

  • External judging: February 24–March 15, 2017
  • Teams notified of results: March 16, 2017

Round 2:  Semi-Finals

Deliverables due: April 11, 2017 by 11:59 p.m.

  • External judging: April 12–April 27, 2017
  • Teams notified of Round 2 results: April 28, 2017

Round 3:  Finals

“Dry Run” Presentation: May 9, 2017
Deliverables due: May 17, 2017

  • Revised Pitch Deck (~10 slides + 5 optional appendix slides)
  • Summary report of additional 10 customer call interviews (maximum 3 pages)

Selected finalists will rotate between conference rooms to pitch their presentations to 2-3 different panels of external business and investment executives for feedback in preparation for the final pitch presentations.

Final Pitch Presentation + Judging:  May 19, 2017

Selected finalists present their pitches to a panel of external judges. Five finalists will be selected to present at the final awards ceremony.

Big Bang! Final Presentations + Awards Ceremony

The top five Big Bang! teams will present at the awards ceremony, which is open to the public. The 1st place, 2nd place and sponsored category award winners will be announced. Following the final presentations, the audience will select the People’s Choice Award Winner.
