Fall Career Fair
Career Development Handbook for Part-time Students

The Graduate School of Management hosts the Fall Career Fair each year. This year it is on Thursday, October 25, 2012. This fair is exclusively for “current” Graduate School of Management students. By invitation only, we may allow for other “Master” degree candidates to attend. The average attendance has been between 20-40 companies and each company pays to participate.

A growing number of initial contacts have been developed and tracked back to this fair for both Career and Internship positions. Recruiters come to meet students face-to-face, collect resumes, and formally or informally publicize upcoming opportunities. All students should take advantage of this event to gather information and ask questions about the various companies, since prior to on campus interviews, most companies attend the Fall GSM Career Fair.

Your attendance at this fair is not mandatory, however, a low turnout reflects poorly on the GSM and may affect the business decisions that are made and the allocation of company resources. Since we are a small school and there is such a high demand for GSM students, we ask that all students try to attend. Some companies will attend the Career Fair in hopes of talking to all interested students and are unable to return to campus until the following year due to budget restraints.

Please take full advantage of their presence by initiating a relationship and make it a point to stay connected with the recruiters. For first-year students, the fair provides an excellent avenue for obtaining information about career fields, specific company culture and internship opportunities. Second-year students will find the fair useful in preparation for interviews and an opportunity to talk with interviewers on a more informal level. You must be proactive and pursue opportunities with these companies by following up with thank you cards. Some may refer you to their web site to register in their databases and submit resumes. Please attend the Job Fair Preparation Workshop for more information.

What opportunities, decisions, events have shaped your professional life?

My career path has been a climb across a jungle gym rather than a tangent up a corporate ladder. As a child, I used to thumb through the three-inch JCPenney catalogue, picking out the professional women who I would grow to be. I wanted to rule the world from a corner office in a suit and heels. I wanted to shed my humble origins and become Corporate Barbie.
