Big Data and Automation are Transforming Public Accounting
MPAc students prepared with data analytics tools to meet industry demand

The public accounting profession has always been a rapidly changing environment, and it is even more so today.

This is why our UC Davis Master of Professional Accountancy (MPAc) program now fully embeds big data analytics into our curriculum.

a RAPIDLY CHANGing industry

Big data technology allows assurance (audit) and tax professionals to focus on higher-level, value-added tasks while automating routine parts of their work—making their roles more rewarding and enjoyable.

We were among the first graduate accounting program in California to incorporate big data analytics into our auditing concentration.

With these technologies, auditors are now able to examine large databases of transactions, rather than a small sample. That provides a stronger assurance of materially correct financial statements. Tax professionals can also automate routine tax return preparation, freeing them up to focus on tax planning, which adds considerable value for their tax clients.

The transformation of the public accounting profession by these big data technologies has been rapid. Yet our ability to train professionals in this new field has been slower to respond.

Embedding big data analytics into the MPAc program changes that, while benefiting students regardless of whether they are concentrating their careers on auditing or taxation.

These big data analytical tools provide MPAc graduates a launch pad for transforming the future of public accounting.

Career LAUNCH PAD

We were among the first graduate accounting program in California to incorporate big data analytics into our auditing concentration. Now all of our graduates—in both audit and taxation—will have the big data tools and knowledge needed to incorporate these exciting new technologies into their careers.

MPAc students will take our Information Systems and Database Structures course, which introduces them to the world of big data processing. A second course will cover the basics of data analytics through data visualization and analytic identification software.

Along with the technology that students will encounter at their firms, these big data analytical tools provide MPAc graduates a launch pad for transforming the future of public accounting.
