Crafting Your Story: Advice on Your Internship Search

From the moment you set foot in your MBA program, you will realize how vitally important finding an internship is to your experience at business school, but also to your future career. 

From the Career Development Team checking in weekly to see how you’re doing to a fellow student walking proudly down the halls with his or her offer letter in hand, the internship search is first and foremost on everyone’s mind. Here’s some advice on how to make the most of your search and get the best results when pursuing your internship.

Landing an internship is a lengthy process.  First you need to figure out what companies you’re interested in.  Next, you have to do extensive research on each company by finding information regarding performance, competition, and current events.  Then you need to connect with a variety of current employees to have informational interviews, which helps you learn about company culture and hiring practices.  After completing multiple rounds of interviews and following up with all your contacts, you cross your fingers and hope to get an offer.  Sounds exhausting?  It is!

Crafting Your Story

While most MBA students understand the above process, it’s easy to quickly brush over the most important part: crafting a story. In my opinion, crafting your story is the most challenging aspect of the internship search because it’s highly introspective and requires you to thoroughly understand your career goals.

If you want to land the right internship, your story needs to make sense.  Employers need to see how your past work experience, extracurricular activities, and personal interests connect to the internship.  You have to be able to explain why you want to work for a specific industry, in a specific company, at a specific location, and in a specific role.  Answering these questions with honesty, clarity, and confidence is difficult, especially for newly enrolled MBA students.  Are you up for the challenge?
