My Dream Comes True: Joining the UC Davis GSM
Not too long ago, I knew something special was about to happen, but I had no idea what was waiting for me behind the curtain.
What was waiting was the unveiling of a great opportunity to join the UC Davis Graduate School of Management (GSM) as the new senior director of admissions. I’ve become part of a dynamic community of academics, practitioners and leaders committed to business education and collaborative learning both in and out of the classroom.
Just before the Thanksgiving holiday, I attended our “Storytelling for Leadership” class taught by Doy Charnsupharindr. He had the MBA students yelling, moving and sharing their life journeys with one another. Alumni participated, then videos from Oprah Winfrey and Sheryl Sandberg were shown and there were lively discussions on how knowing your story can help you land that dream job. It was fantastic to experience one of the many outstanding faculty that teach at the School.
The day before, I joined 12 UC Davis students on a field trip to fresh food recycler California Safe Soil as part of a new Food and Agriculture Industry Pre-Immersion course. We saw first-hand how a start-up based by research from UC Davis is transforming the food industry by creating organic fertilizer from waste products. In this experiential, interdisplinary class led by Academic Director Julie Morris, our MBA students joined Ph.D. candidates in agricultural engineering and biotechnology researchers to network and learn from each other.
Can it possibly get any better, I asked myself? Then, just last week, our UC Davis Full-Time MBA program was recognized by Bloomberg Businessweek among the top 40 MBA programs in the nation, having jumped 20 places since the last time the program was ranked. And the UC Davis MBA is ranked No. 9 in the “Learning” category, which reflects our curriculum and teaching environment.
This followed The Economist ranking our faculty No. 8 in the world and our Full-Time MBA program No. 54 globally, moving up nearly 30 spots.
I invite you to visit our special place, attend a class, meet with our MBA Ambassadors and staff and consider what your life story would be like at the UC Davis GSM. Attend a class.
I’m looking forward to sharing more stories about this hidden gem through this blog over the coming months.
