Small Town USA, Big Opportunities MBA: Why Davis, CA?
Before I came to GSM, many friends told me that I would feel bored in Davis, because people from big cities could never enjoy the life in a small town like Davis. After eight months studying and living here, I would like to say Davis is absolutely not just a college town. You can expect more from this amazing place.
Davis is north of the San Francisco Bay Area, 15 miles west of the state’s capital, Sacramento, and 72 miles from San Francisco. You can drive an hour to Sonoma and Napa Valley Winery, two hours to the ski paradise Lake Tahoe and two hours to the ocean-side towns such as Mendocino and Santa Cruz. If you are from other states or other countries, Davis is good start point for your new adventure in California.
There are tons of recreational resources on the campus. You can register for any physical education courses, like golf, field hockey, tennis, hapkido, rock climbing and horseback riding. Most courses are free and you can fully take advantage of your six quarters to enjoy these activities as much as you want. The combination of pleasant climate and beautiful rural environment also offers opportunities for biking on the city’s well maintained bicycle paths. Even if you don’t want to commit to an extra course, isn’t biking a good exercise for you after hours sitting in the classroom?
The city of Davis and the university community share in many enjoyable cultural activities and events. The Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts sponsors theater, dance, opera, film and music performances throughout the year, bringing to the area fine artists and productions. Here are two more good news for you: Mondavi Center is only walks’ away from Gallagher Hall (home of GSM) and you can get a free ticket for any performance at Mondavi Center in your first year (don’t waste this awesome opportunity!).
The campus holds various festive annual celebrations, including the Whole Earth Festival, Picnic Day, and colorful Cultural Days. As UC Davis’ annual open house event, Picnic Day has been prominently featured in the press. This traditional event has been voted “Best Davis Event” by the California Aggie for the past four years. As a part of GSM, you should never miss this opportunity to show off yourself in the parade marching with the Briefcase Brigade! We represent with professional attire on top and sweet party shorts on the bottom – this is the way future business elites should look!
There is far more interesting stuff waiting for you here. So why hesitate? Come and join us. You will find out how fascinating Davis is.
