Students and Alums Host Sold-Out TEDx Talk
Professor Gina Dokko headlines third TEDxUCDavisSF

To explore ideas with the potential to transform lives and create movements—that’s why we chose Movement as our theme for the 2018 TEDxUCDavisSF.

And it was another sold out event.

Held in April at the SPUR Urban Center in San Francisco, the third annual TEDx event was organized by our team of students and alumni from the UC Davis Graduate School of Management.

Professor Gina Dokko rebrands career baggage

Our goal: To build a presence for the Graduate School of Management network with a TEDx event engaging industry experts and the Bay Area community.

We brought together 13 thought leaders in social justice, business, technology and the performing arts who presented insightful and creative talks on “movements.”

THE EXPERT ON CAREER BAGGAGE

I was especially inspired by Professor Gina Dokko’s talk on career mobility. Her class was one of my favorites as a UC Davis MBA student and it was such an honor to have her speak.

Her talk centered on the concept of “career baggage.” She said that while “baggage” tends to have a negative connotation, it should be thought of as a “toolkit accumulated from past experience, knowledge and ways of thinking.”

“Be thoughtful about what your experiences have given you, and use them strategically to move toward your career aspirations.”

While not every tool is needed for every job, Dokko advised that it’s best to “be thoughtful about what your experiences have given you, and use them strategically to move toward your career aspirations.”

JOIN THE TALKS

TEDxUCDavisSF is unique because it was founded by alumni of the UC Davis Bay Area MBA program and run by both students and alumni. TEDxUCDavisSF provides an opportunity for different cohorts to connect and bond over a common goal.

This year, the planning process spanned more than eight months, and we reviewed about 50 speaker applications, narrowing it to the 13 great talks.

It truly is amazing how much a team can accomplish together.
