What is a data hackathon?

A hackathon is a data case competition in which groups of problem solvers come together in teams to develop a solution for a given business problem. There will be free food and prizes provided, and opportunities to network with representatives from various partner companies.

What should I bring?

School ID, chargers, sleeping bag, toiletries, a lot of enthusiasm and of course your laptop! Please don’t bring alcohol and drugs, or your team may be disqualified.

What is the deadline for registration?

Registration closes on April 2nd – all teams are expected to be formed by then.

Who is eligible to participate in Data Hackathon 2018?

This hackathon is limited to UC Davis and partner schools’ graduate students only. However, working professionals and students from other schools are welcome to sign up for the pre-hackathon workshops.

Is prior experience needed?

Hackathons are great for beginners. You don’t need to learn anything special to attend the hackathon. Furthermore, 24 hours is plenty of time to learn something new and apply it!

Will there be prizes?

A panel of judges will decide on the winning hacks based on criteria of creativity, usefulness, technical difficulty, and form. Up to $1,000 cash prize will be awarded to top teams. The winning teams will also have opportunities to be invited for interviews by our case partners.

What is the required team size?

We recommend working in teams of 3 people, though 2 is also acceptable. The main reason for this is because our corporate sponsors are looking for analytics talent that can collaborate well in team settings

I have other questions not included in the FAQ.
