This hackathon is a student-run event and organized by the MSBA Directors’ Student Advisory Council.
The UC Davis Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) launched in 2017, and is an accelerated analytics program that blends data science skills with business knowledge and organizational savvy. During the course of ten months, students go through a multi-disciplinary curriculum that imparts knowledge in topics including, but not limited to advanced statistics, machine learning, data management/design, and big data analytics. The program is ranked #10 in the US and #6 Globally for Value for Money in the most recent QS Masters Rankings 2020.
The Hackathon is the MSBA’s signature yearly event and takes place in the first week of April. It is a 24-hour long data and business analytics competition that gives students an opportunity to showcase their business sense and analytical skills. Every year, the program collaborates with industry case partners who provide data and also form a part of the final judging panel. The objective is to showcase the program’s talent and establish recruitment opportunities for students.
Teams of two to four students will work around the clock to deliver business solutions for a real-world problem. They will put their innovative thinking and collective blend of business and technical skills to work using problem structuring, statistical methods, machine learning, data visualization, etc.
Analytics professionals and recruiters from partners will serve as judges. Winners will be announced on April 8, followed by a networking mixer.
Registrations are open! The event will take place in San Francisco. Location TBD.
Complete the form to register in teams and and receive email announcements from Data Hackathon 2020.
RSVP by April 1 to ensure your spot in the Hackathon.
What is a data hackathon?
A hackathon is a data case competition in which groups of problem solvers come together in teams to develop a solution for a given business problem. There will be free food provided, and opportunities to network with representatives from various partner companies.
What should I bring?
School ID, chargers, sleeping bag, toiletries, a lot of enthusiasm and of course your laptop!
What is the deadline for registration?
Registration closes on April 1st – all teams are expected to be formed by then.
Who is eligible to participate in Data Hackathon 2020?
UC Davis students as well as graduate students from other schools are eligible to participate.
Is prior experience needed?
Definitely not! Hackathons are a great experience for both beginners as well as experts. You don’t need to learn anything special to attend the hackathon. Furthermore, 24 hours is plenty of time to learn something new and apply it!
What is the required team size?
Teams should be 2-4 max. The main reason for this is because our corporate sponsors are looking for analytics talent that can collaborate well in team settings. Please note that the minimum member per team is 2.
