Little Bang! Poster Competitions
The Little Bang! Poster Competition is designed to help UC Davis students define their business idea and communicate it concisely using a poster. This is an entry-level competition, no business experience is necessary.
This series of three poster sessions is intended to support currently enrolled UC Davis students on their entrepreneurial journey and to promote business ideas where university intellectual property is not a primary driver.
- Little Bang! Session 1: December 7, 2017
Up to twenty (20) $500 microgrants available.
- Little Bang! Session 2: January 24, 2018
Up to ten (10) $1,000 microgrants available.
- Little Bang! Session 3: May 24, 2018
Up to four (4) $2,500 microgrants available.
Participants do not need to have entered any one poster session to be eligible for consideration in a subsequent poster session. All are encouraged to take advantage of information and assistance provided in Big Bang! workshops and office hours (see below).
Students not selected for an award in any one session may refine their posters and/or submit new ideas for consideration in subsequent sessions. Award size increases as the series progresses. Learn more about Little Bang! prizes.
Program funding for Little Bang! is provided by the State of California through Assembly Bill 2664: University of California Innovation and Entrepreneurship Expansion.
Submission / Participation Guidelines
Participants must be currently enrolled UC Davis students at the undergraduate or graduate level with a business ideas where university intellectual property is not a primary driver.

SESSION 1 – Thursday, December 7, 2017
In Session 1, no verbal pitch is required. Participants will stand next to their poster to answer questions from judges and attendees. These interactions provide valuable feedback for future development of their poster and idea.
Refer to Session 1 Guidelines for complete details on market research, preparation, formatting and judging criteria for your poster submission. Posters submitted by November 30 at 12 p.m. will be printed free of charge.
Interested participants must RSVP to register no later than Monday, December 4 at 5 p.m. Note that you will be entering a poster where indicated.
Session 1 awardees agree to:
- Write a one-page (minimum 500-word) plan establishing milestones for developing their business idea and reflecting on lessons learned participating in Little Bang! Session 1.
- Participate in Little Bang! Session 2 on January 24, 2018.
SESSION 2 – Wednesday, January 24, 2018
In Session 2, a 90-second pitch is required. During speed rotation rounds, participants will stand next to their poster and practice their pitch in front of attendees. These interactions provide valuable feedback for future development of their pitch, poster and idea. Once speed rounds conclude, participants will present in front of the entire group.
Interested participants must RSVP to register no later than Monday, January 22 at 5 p.m. Note that you will be entering a poster where indicated.
SESSION 3 – Thursday, May 24, 2018
The institute’s student ambassadors will hold regular office hours to assist students in preparing their Little Bang! poster. Ambassadors are available to meet with individuals or teams to answer questions, offer feedback and advise students.
