Networking Reception and Dinner: Tuesday, June 3, 6:00 PM

On Tuesday, June 3rd, all program participants are cordially invited to the opening night of this new program to enjoy dinner and networking opportunities. This reception and dinner will provide you with an opportunity to socialize and connect with our program speakers and other industry executives to begin important discussions about the hot topics in wine packaging today.

Crash-Course on Design Thinking

In our opening session, you will have the opportunity to engage in a fast-paced design thinking exercise with experts Vivian Barad and Judy Guo from the award winning global design firm, IDEO. The session is meant to stir your creative thinking about packaging innovations that could touch the wine industry, and get you ready for a day of discussion, debate and discovery.

You will leave this session with knowledge and tools that you can take back to the office to use immediately, bringing the exclusive IDEO brainstorming process to your team.

Applying Research to Package Decisions

Improve your odds of success by doing your homework!  In this session, Christian Miller from Full Glass Research will discuss with you the pros and cons of doing research, and why so many companies skip this step when considering package design. You will have the opportunity to review best practices while hearing about real life examples from industry and discuss topics such as idea generation, decision criteria, and cost and distribution decision points. You’ll come away understanding the good, the bad, and the potential pitfalls you will come up against when making packaging decisions.

New UC Davis Research

In this session, Dr. Anita Oberholster will discuss the findings from a recent UC Davis research study on closure technology led by Dr. Andrew Waterhouse. Be the first to ask pressing questions and learn what they found when presenting consumers with wine that has been bottled and caped with natural cork, synthetic cork and screw tops. You’ll also have the opportunity to hear about what new research is being planned at UC Davis for the wine industry, giving you the opportunity to get the answers to all of your questions directly from the experts.

Consumer and Retail Trends

Hear the latest proprietary wine industry market trends data directly from Brian Lechner of Nielsen. Discover what you need to know when thinking about packaging from a customer’s perspective.  

You’ll also have the opportunity to hear from Jeff Slater, Director of Global Marketing for Nomacorc, and discover how packaging decisions can be used to create an emotional bond with consumers. The framework discussed will give you an excellent tool to use back at work when making package decisions, and will be used to engage you in a discussion with a panel of retail, restaurant, and consumer research experts including Robert Dyer, Merchandise Director of the Pacific Division for Walmart Stores Inc.; Patrick Merrill, Cofounder and General Partner of Merrill Research; and John Conover, General Manager/Partner at Plumpjack Estate Winery, Cade Estate Winery and Odette Estate Winery.

Talk directly to those in-the-know about what really happens when your customers enter a restaurant or retail location looking to make a purchase. 

Real World Case Studies

If you’ve seen the Sofia canned wine or the PaperBoy “bottle” and wondered, “How did they come up with that?”, now is your chance to find out the answer to that question and much more! After lunch, you’ll have the opportunity to hear from Corey Beck from Coppola, Alison Crowe from Garnet Vineyards / Plata Wine Partners and Teresa Mengali, from Truett-Hurst, who have lead their wineries through package design revolutions, using packaging to launch new products and reach new markets.  Hear directly from the inside what went well, what could have gone better, and the unexpected obstacles that needed to be overcome. Ask questions and get answers while working through a packaging decision tree tool designed specifically for this program.

What’s New in Glass and Sustainable Alternatives?

Everyone has questions when it comes to what kind of glass to use when bottling their wine, or if they should even use glass at all.  What’s the perfect formula when it comes to weight, spoilage, shelf appeal?  How will consumers react to your choices? What do your choices in bottling and shipping mean for the overall carbon footprint of your winery? 

In this session, you will have the opportunity to hear from Dale DeVore, Director of Product Design for the Ardagh Group about what your glass partner can offer you to set your product apart, and then hear from Andrew Sauber, Sustainability Manager at O-I about alternatives in packaging and shipping that you may want to consider. This conversation is designed to help you know what questions to ask when exploring packaging options, while giving you the latest ideas and opening you up to new ways of thinking about current trends and what they really mean to you.

Conversations that Matter: Fads, Trends and Ideas That Took Hold

What’s new, what’s coming, what should we be watching? In this session, you will be given the opportunity to talk with industry insiders Bill Leigon, Tim Keller, and Jordan Kivelstadt and debate their predictions for the future. We’ll talk through what’s happening today and what fads and trends are on the horizon. Come and participate in a good-spirited debate with some of the industry’s most opinionated thought leaders.
