Sustainable AgTech Innovation Center
From 2012 through 2016, the UC Davis Sustainable AgTech Innovation Center (SATIC) supported the commercialization of clean ag technologies by identifying and accelerating new ventures that promote sustainability in the agricultural field—including new agricultural practices, water and energy efficiency in production and food processing, advances in nutrition, food quality and safety, and new food products.
SATIC served as a nexus for achieving the economic and environmental outcomes essential to the long-term competitiveness, prosperity, health and quality of life in the Sacramento region, including food security. It provided a virtual incubator of programs and services that include Sustainable AgTech Workshops, AgVentureStart mentoring and access to capital, the Big Bang! Business Competition, a prototype fund to test the market and technological feasibility of commercial prototypes, several campus mentoring programs and regional showcase events.
Andrew Hargadon, the institute’s founder and faculty director and a professor at the UC Davis Graduate School of Management, served as the principal investigator for the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration’s i6 Challenge Grant that established SATIC.
In recent years, the World Food Center (WFC) and Innovation Institute for Food and Health (IIFH) have been established to serve as the focus of agricultural innovation at UC Davis. While SATIC longer operates as an independent center, activities will continue at UC Davis within WFC and IIFH.
SATIC was a collaboration between UC Davis and SARTA/AgStart, leveraging their extensive internal and external resources and partnerships. The center was made possible, in part, by a grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration’s 2012 i6 Challenge: Sacramento Region Clean AgTech Innovation Center Development Project.
