Dean’s Big 3 Video Enews Earns Gold in 2020 CASE Awards
Top honors in peer-reviewed, global higher education competition
“Welcome to the Big 3, our award-winning enewsletter from the UC Davis Graduate School of Management.”
The UC Davis Graduate School of Management’s monthly Dean’s Big 3 video e-newsletter series has earned top honors with a Gold award in the digital external audience newsletter category in the Council for Advancement and Support of Education’s peer-reviewed 2020 Circle of Excellence Awards.
With 3,600 member institutions in 82 countries, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) is the global non-profit association of professionals dedicated to educational advancement—alumni relations, communications, development, marketing, and advancement services—who share the goal of championing education to transform lives and society.
“I’m very pleased to see our School and our marketing team earn this well-deserved honor,” said Dean H. Rao Unnava. “We take great pride in sharing the many accomplishments of alumni, professors and staff at the Graduate School of Management through this enewsletter and over the years it’s grown into a well-known and celebrated update for our community.”
With four program locations, an online MBA, and alumni and various stakeholders worldwide, the School has a challenge to share the latest news, activities and highlights in a quick, “executive summary” format.
Launched in October 2016 to help introduce newly appointed Dean Unnava to peer deans and our community, the Big 3 series concept is simple: Focus on the three most interesting, highest-profile stories happening at the School each month, highlighting each with a short paragraph and short video hosted by Dean Unnava sharing about each story.
“Fun, short, informative format. Videos are engaging and easy to watch. Highlighting three stories makes the content digestible, therefore, readable. Clear goals and content strategy.”

This is the second CASE award for the Big 3 e-newsletter series. In 2018, the Big 3 won the Gold award at the CASE District VII awards, which encompasses West Coast member institutions.
“The Big 3 reflects the strategic investment in building the capabilities of the Marketing and Communications team,” said Tim Akin, executive director of marketing and communications at the School.
“It truly takes a village. Each Big 3 has the fingerprints of every member of our team—from story ideas, script writing, video production, e-news layout, photos, graphics, copy editing, list segmentation, social sharing, and campaign performance analysis. It quickly became a signature publication and it continues to be a well-received monthly update for other business schools and for the entire GSM community. It is wonderful to receive recognition from our peers in higher education.”
This year, a record number of countries participated in the annual CASE Circle of Excellence competition. CASE received 2,752 entries from 28 countries—up from 20 the year prior. 587 institutions submitted entries across 100 categories, and winners were selected based on several factors, including overall quality, innovation, use of resources and impact.
UC Davis claimed six CASE awards this year, including two Golds for the Unfold podcast series and single episode category, Silver for the campus’ Give Day promotion, and Bronze awards for the best use of social media, and advancement services improvement.
“These awards demonstrate our members’ success in advancing their institutions through their remarkable and varied work across all advancement disciplines,” said Sue Cunningham, CASE President and CEO, in the organizations news release this week.
