The Executive Director (ED), MSBA is a management position responsible for providing broad leadership and direction to the management of full-life cycle of the student experience. This spans student recruitment, admissions, student services, career development and student placement. The candidate closely partners with the MSBA Academic Director who is responsible for the academic experience and innovations. The ED provides complimentary leadership to enable students to take full advantage of the robust academic experience. The ED also establishes and cultivates strong alumni relations for the MSBA program at the Graduate School of Management.  Performs long and short range strategic planning. 

This role reports directly to the Senior Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and is a key partner to the MSBA Academic Director. This position has a central role in strategic planning, student program and recruitment planning, program development, and risk management. The incumbent is responsible for management of a dynamic team and ensuring program success of key deliverables around: Recruitment and Admissions, Student Services, Career Development and Student Placement, and Alumni Relationships.

The ED will also marshal multiple support units of the GSM and UC Davis (including business operations, instructional support, finance, marketing, admissions, and technology) as well as external resources such as at University of California, Hastings, in order to provide support services to MSBA faculty, students, and industry partners.

The ED’s success will be reflected through external recognition of excellence of the MSBA program, and high demand for its graduates for their skills and passion for creating business value from data. The ED will work with the MSBA faculty and staff teams to attract a diverse and talented pool of incoming students, and then to ensure a superior student experience in all respects. The ED is expected to achieve this goal by creating efficient processes, designing plans for successful execution of key tasks and events, and managing execution while working closely with organizational support staff. This job will require presence 1-2 days in San Francisco, or the Bay Area as needed for classes and alumni and corporate cultivation on a weekly basis, and intermittent travel to Davis.

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

This position is hybrid and based in San Francisco 1-2 days per week with intermittent travel to Davis. 

30% RECRUITMENT & ADMISSIONS

  • Manages MSBA recruitment team and oversees formulation of recruitment strategies and tactics leveraging the strength of the UC Davis and GSM brand and our success in international business school rankings.
  • Creates scholarship packages designed to attract top quality students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Develops, in collaboration with other senior leaders, marketing and advertising strategies and materials to attract a qualified and diverse study body.
  • Collaborates with external vendors to develop marketing collateral to execute the GSM's marketing and communication strategies to attract students.
  • Establishes performance metrics and ensures the recruitment and admissions teams meet annual performance goals.
  • Oversees the admissions and enrollment process.
  • Works with Faculty Admissions Committee, Senior Assistant Dean, as well as faculty chair to ensure academic and professional standards are upheld in the admissions process.
  • Supports the needs to Faculty Admissions Committee, providing infrastructure and also synthesizing recommendations.
  • Marshalls support units inside the GSM to ensure smooth execution of recruitment and admissions needs and processes.


30% STUDENT SERVICES & STUDENT RECORDS

  • Provides support and partnership to the Academic Director, and works with faculty to maintain the student experience inside and outside of the classroom.
  • Provides leadership and strategic guidance for the MSBA staff in charge of student services, and works in collaboration with the GSM Student Services Team to ensure a world-class student experience.
  • Oversees all administrative and student programming activities including orientation and engagements related to community building and program enrichment.
  • Ensures the implementation of curricular and administrative changes are managed to ensure a successful student experience.
  • In collaboration with the MSBA Academic Director and Associate Director, interfaces with the student leadership team to provide and receive feedback. Interfaces appropriate campus units included Senior Assistant Dean as needed regarding confidential student matters or programmatic issues.  


30% CAREER DEVELOPMENT & STUDENT PLACEMENT

  • Manages MSBA Industry Partnerships Manager, and staff TBD in developing formulation of world-class career development and student placement strategy, and plan. 
  • Strategically partners with the Senior Assistant Dean and Senior Director of Career Development to develop and execute a strategic and tactical plan to strengthen and expand professional opportunities for MSBA students to continue to achieve higher placement rates and salaries for graduates.
  • Ensures the establishment of selected strategic partnerships with Fortune 500, regional and startup companies for placement, admissions, fundraising, academic programming, and research by proactively engaging them in new ways, piloting new programs and modifying and building upon current models.
  • Manages performance metrics for career development including those used by entities that evaluate and rank the MSBA program in comparison to the other business schools worldwide.  

10% ALUMNI RELATIONS AND CULTIVATION

  • In partnership with leadership as well as Development and Alumni Relations, create and executive an alumni engagement strategy. Cultivate relationships with MSBA and key MBA alumni. 
  • Create engagements that enable alumni to have forums to engagement in a meaningful manner with the school.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • A Masters in data analytics, management or related field.
  • Seven years of progressive management experience in higher education programs, business analytics industry experience or in a related field with a minimum of two years of high-level student affairs or other relevant experience within a large, complex higher educational institution or senior level analytics industry experience.
  • Proven track record of effective leadership in the area of student affairs including recruitment, admissions, student services, and career placement OR senior level analytics industry experience with mentorship background.  Adept at managing teams and resources to achieve outstanding outcomes.
  • Strong strategic thinking and planning skills. High degree of analytical skills and problem-solving ability to effectively provide sound recommendations and continually examine systems and develop or revise to accommodate change requirements.
  • Skills to engage in academic and strategic planning at all levels of the organization, and to effectively articulate programmatic goals and work collaboratively with leadership.
  • Proven excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with diverse groups and individuals at all levels of the organization, establish formal and informal relationships with others to provide feedback, information, and support, secure and/or provide information to clarify situations and decisions, resolve problems in a collaborative manner and communicate policy decisions.
  • Experience and team building skills to effectively recruit, train, evaluate, motivate, resolve problems/conflicts, conduct performance management and build an effective service-oriented, team environment. Success in supervision of staff with the ability to create the structure and practices that allow for staff and self to continuously upgrade capabilities.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Effective leadership in managing the full-life cycle of the student experience to high-caliber outcomes that result in top-tier program rankings. This can be drawn from either higher education or industry experience.
  • Possessing a nuanced understanding of the recruitment of high caliber analytics candidates to academic programs, as well as industry needs for analytics talent.
  • Ability to identify and utilize employee strengths, while supporting the development of new competencies in an exciting and dynamic environment.
  • Ability to achieve goals through promoting collaboration and teambuilding and working cooperatively with peers, employees and faculty.  
  • Demonstrated experience in innovative development and project management skills with the ability to take complex, high impact projects from conception to fruition in a timely and effective manner.
