Email #4 | Summer Boost Video Chat Follow-up | July 13, 2016

Dear Fall 2016 Entering Class:

Thank you to those who attended our Summer Boost video chat session today. I enjoyed participating and making contact with you.

Today’s meeting was a very productive and there were some questions that I would like to follow-up with some answers and resources that are worth sharing with the entire entering cohort.

  1. For your reference, here is the New Student Computing and Support Information and the GSM computing support FAQ here. On the FAQ site you will learn how to link to our Wi-Fi, how to add GSM print drivers to your computing device, and much, much more. To access the FAQ, you will need your UC Davis computing account email and login.
  2. If you have other questions regarding your computing equipment please email our GSM computing support help desk at helpdesk@gsm.ucdavis.edu. They are very helpful, extremely knowledgeable, and are in the best position to answer the more difficult computing specific questions.
  3. Those who are using Apple products, please be aware that for your statistics courses you will need to download software that won’t run on Mac computers. You may want to use Parallels to be able to use these products (great suggestion today). Our GSM computing support also recommends using VMWare Fusion as well. For more information on Mac Computers, please see the Student Orientation IT Services Group. If you have further questions, please contact the helpdesk directly.
  4. As a UC Davis student you have access to a free version of Microsoft Office 365, you will need your computing account email and login.
  5. The Student Health Insurance Program coverage during Fall Quarter will be from September 19, 2016-January 5, 2017.
  6. Many of you are experiencing a tight housing market in Davis. We mentioned today that the UC Davis housing department has a link on their page titled “Apartments (Privatized)”. Finally, here is another resource that Elizabeth found that has some decent options for bedrooms in shared houses with other graduate students.

I have uploaded Email Announcement #3 here. To catch up with any past information please review that site.

Sincerely,

Email #6 | Course Waiver Exam Information | August 2, 2016

Hello Incoming Class of 2016,

Please read this email carefully to determine your eligibility of waiving out of a required core course.

You may be exempted from the requirement to take certain core courses in one of two ways:

Option 1) The faculty member teaching the course may grant an exception at their discretion based on you having completed previous coursework and/or experience. (Do not use the survey contained in this email for this purpose. Email the professor directly.)

Option 2) You successfully pass the waiver exam for a specific core course.

Exemption from a core course does not award course credit and you must take additional units to replace the exempted course.

Core course waiver exams are designed to test your knowledge on a particular subject at the graduate level.  Only students with extensive experience and/or academic coursework should plan to take a waiver exam.  Please note that it is rare for students to qualify to take more than one waiver exam.

The fall 2016 core courses available for waivers are:

200A Financial Accounting -Full-time MBA Program only

If you have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting and/or are a certified public accountant, you are automatically waived from taking the core Financial Accounting Course (200A).  You should email Professor Hollis Skaife and summarize your relevant educational background or certification that qualifies you for the exemption.  She will send an email to you and the GSM Registrar confirming your exemption.

If you don’t meet the above criteria and believe that you have a very good understanding of basic accounting principles, you must register to take the waiver exam.  If you minored in accounting or have already taken a few financial accounting courses, you may attempt the waiver exam. Professor Hollis Skaife does not recommend waiving the course if you have had only one previous undergraduate financial accounting course, as beginning undergraduate accounting courses are typically taught with an emphasis towards bookkeeping, whereas this course is taught with an emphasis towards managerial decision making.

202A Markets and the Firm (Microeconomics)- All MBA Programs

You may waive out of 202A if you can show proficiency in economics, in one of two ways:

(1) By registering for and taking the waiver exam;

(2) By petitioning the instructor, Professor Victor Stango, and providing evidence of proficiency, which may include an undergraduate degree in economics or successful completion of a graduate-level course with content similar to 202A.

203A Data Analysis for Managers (Statistics)- All MBA Programs

If you have an undergraduate or graduate degree in mathematics or statistics, you must e-mail Professor Roger Edelen so that he can verify that you are automatically waived from taking 203A. This course may also be waived if you have taken several statistics classes, but Professor Edelen needs to make a case-by-case determination. You should e-mail Professor Roger Edelen and list the relevant educational background for possible exemption.

If you don’t meet the above criteria and believe you are highly proficient in statistics, you must register to take the waiver exam for 203A.

Please complete this survey by Friday, August 12 to record your interest in taking a waiver exam.

Waiver exams are being offered at each campus at the date and time below:

Davis

200A, 202A, 203A

Wednesday, August 17, 2-5pm

Sacramento

202A, 203A

Thursday, August 18, 5:30-8:30pm

San Ramon

202A, 203A

Friday, August 19, 4-7pm

You will receive confirmation of your waiver exam request by Monday, August 15.

Kind Regards,

Frances
