I would like to take this opportunity to start your transition into the GSM. Over the next several months I will contact you to ensure you are properly preparing to join the MPAc program. Below are reminders to jump-start this transition process.

  1. Always reference your VIP pages for upcoming deadlines and action items. You may also reference the GSM MPAc Current Student website for any additional resources that pertain to Current Students.

Dear Entering Class of 2016:

Remember to always reference your VIP pages and the GSM website for any additional updates. Below are some additional resources for your reference.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me directly.

  1. If you need living accommodations before Orientation and before securing more permanent housing, please take advantage of the Orientation 2016 Room Block at Hyatt Place. Reference the Orientation website for details. The Room Block offer ends August 5.
  2. Sign up for Orientation as soon as possible.
    • Once you sign-up, you will have the option to professional UC Davis Business Cards. You will want to use these cards during Orientation when you meet with firms. If you don’t sign-up for orientation early, we may not be able to get your cards delivered prior to the beginning of Orientation. You will need a local phone number to get your business cards ordered.
    • On the orientation sign-up, please note the fields that reference the business cards. Add your name as you would want it to appear on these professional cards (first and last name). Please see image below.
  1. You are required to bring your laptop to Orientation 2016. Please review the following websites for your GSM Computing needs:
    • Please review the New Student Computing and Support Information.
    • All UC Davis Students have access to download a free version Microsoft Office 365. In order to do this, you need to login using your UC Davis login and password (you created this when you signed-up for your UCD Email Computing Account).
    • You can get computing equipment at the UCDavis Tech Hub and receive educational discounts. Please contact the Tech Hub for more information at 530-752-1945.

Email #3 | Orientation 2016 Schedule Overview and Quant Fun Deadline Approaching | July 8, 2016

Dear Fall 2016 Entering Class:

The Orientation 2016 Schedule Overview and the Communication and Culture Bootcamp Detailed Schedules have been posted for your review. Please see the 2016 Orientation website for details.

  1. If you still need to find living accommodations, please review the Student Housing privatized options here.
  2. All international students are required to attend the Communication and Culture Boot Camp. This programming is highly recommended for Permanent Residents and optional for Domestic Students
  3. During orientation you will receive permanent name Tags. When you sign up for orientation, you will fill out your preferred name as you want it to appear on the name tag. Remember, these nametags will be used at career fairs and GSM events throughout the year. If you request any changes, you will be responsible for purchasing the new nametags.
  4. Once you sign-up for orientation I will order your business cards. Please be sure to include your US cell phone number. If you do not have a US cell phone number, I will not be able to purchase your business cards. If you currently do not have a US cell number, please email me as soon as you get that number. At that point I will order your business cards.

Email #4 | Summer Boost Video Chat Follow-up | July 13, 2016

Dear Fall 2016 Entering Class:

Thank you to those who attended our Summer Boost video chat session today. I enjoyed participating and making contact with you.

Today’s meeting was a very productive and there were some questions that I would like to follow-up with some answers and resources that are worth sharing with the entire entering cohort.

  1. For your reference, here is the New Student Computing and Support Information and the GSM computing support FAQ here. On the FAQ site you will learn how to link to our Wi-Fi, how to add GSM print drivers to your computing device, and much, much more. To access the FAQ, you will need your UC Davis computing account email and login.
  2. If you have other questions regarding your computing equipment please email our GSM computing support help desk at helpdesk@gsm.ucdavis.edu. They are very helpful, extremely knowledgeable, and are in the best position to answer the more difficult computing specific questions.
  3. Those who are using Apple products, please be aware that for your statistics courses you will need to download software that won’t run on Mac computers. You may want to use Parallels to be able to use these products (great suggestion today). Our GSM computing support also recommends using VMWare Fusion as well. For more information on Mac Computers, please see the Student Orientation IT Services Group. If you have further questions, please contact the helpdesk directly.
  4. As a UC Davis student you have access to a free version of Microsoft Office 365, you will need your computing account email and login.
  5. The Student Health Insurance Program coverage during Fall Quarter will be from September 19, 2016-January 5, 2017.
  6. Many of you are experiencing a tight housing market in Davis. We mentioned today that the UC Davis housing department has a link on their page titled “Apartments (Privatized)”. Finally, here is another resource that Elizabeth found that has some decent options for bedrooms in shared houses with other graduate students.

Sincerely,
