Co-Founder and CEO, ViVita Technologies
Maelene Wong is co-founder and CEO of ViVita Technologies Inc., a tissue engineering company founded out of UC Davis following the Biomedical Engineering Entrepreneurship Academy in 2012. She received her doctoral degree from UC Davis in biomedical engineering and BS in bioengineering from UC Berkeley. Wong is a postdoctoral scholar at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. She is passionate about translating her research into medical applications to help patients suffering from deteriorating quality of life while awaiting organ transplantation.
During her doctoral program, Wong pioneered a novel approach to remove the immunological barriers in animal-derived tissue for regenerative medicine applications. With this patent-pending, platform technology, ViVita intends to eliminate the shortage of donor organs and tissues by generating off-the-shelf replacements. Vessel patches and grafts represent ViVita’s minimally viable product, permitting downstream development of heart valve replacements with greater longevity and, ultimately, whole organs. ViVita is seeking to raise a $1.5M seed round to perform large animal studies to support first-in-human clinical trials.
