A personalized, cell-based regenerative approach to cures
Stefan Kalomoiris is a doctoral candidate in the Biochemistry Molecular Cellular and Developmental Biology Graduate Group. Born and raised in Greece, he moved to California to pursue his graduate education. He works in the Nolta laboratory at the UC Davis Institute for Regenerative Cures.
What’s important about your research—and where do you hope to take it?
My research interests focus on genetically engineering mesenchymal stem cells and developing ways to use them as powerful cures to human diseases. My colleagues and I at the Institute for Regenerative Cures are developing cell-based therapies for a wide variety of applications. Our work has broad implications for regenerative therapies for critical limb ischemia, a major complication of atherosclerosis and diabetes.
What are you most passionate about in your work?
I am passionate about applying basic research to improve human health, specifically moving beyond the paradigm of drug therapy and to a more personalized, cell-based regenerative approach. Regenerative cures have great potential to alleviate suffering, and our vocation as stem cell scientists is to develop safe and effective therapies to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from intractable illness.
How will in the Business Development Fellows program help you to change the world?
At the Institute for Regenerative Cures, I regularly meet people afflicted by a wide variety of ailments. They are suffering and desperate for a cure, but the basic discoveries of science alone are insufficient to offer them relief. I hope to use this sense of urgency and empathy, in combination with the skills I gain as a Business Development Fellow, to help bring our discoveries to market swiftly and benefit these patients.
Now at midpoint in the program, what is the most important thing you have learned—and the most critical connection you have made?
I appreciate how the program covers different aspects of starting a company, building the right network of people, and help us design successful strategies to reach the market. In particular, I like the opportunities it offers us to connect with investors and entrepreneurs.
