A laptop computer less than three years old is required. To ensure complete compatibility with the wireless network and print services at the GSM, Dell Latitude series laptops are recommended and educational discounts are available through the UC Davis Bookstore Techhub shop.
You must have access to Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (or better) and a recent version of Microsoft Office for Windows.
Apple/Mac owners must use Mac OSx 10.10 (Yosemite) or newer. Apple/Mac owners must also use Bootcamp, Parallels, or VMWare Fusion to run Windows 7 (or newer) and a recent version of Microsoft Office for Windows.
Antivirus software is required when using the campus network. Microsoft’s Security Essentials (MSE) and Sophos Home Edition for Mac are no cost Anti-Virus software.
Activating Your UC Davis Account & E-mail
You activate your UC Davis computing account via the UC Davis website (computingaccounts.ucdavis.edu) to obtain a Kerberos log in/password and Mail ID. You need these three items and your Personal Access Code (PAC) to access online services provided by UC Davis (e.g., registration, career services tools, etc.).
As a UC Davis GSM student, you have access to the following services:
- Wireless network accessible anywhere in the GSM building.
- Personal UC Davis email account.
- Dedicated printers in the building.
The UC Davis Student Computing Guide (scg.ucdavis.edu) and Help & Training (iet.ucdavis.edu/help/) provide computing support information. Campus IET Help Desk technicians are available at (530) 754-HELP (754-4357) Monday through Friday from 7am to 9pm. You can also e-mail them anytime at firstname.lastname@example.org.
