Where Business Meets Biotechnology Science

From a QIAGEN case study to Genentech, inside the UC Davis MBA Biotechnology Industry Immersion

QIAGEN, a leading provider of sample and assay technologies, was facing a patent cliff with enough capital to fund only one program: a safer, late-stage reformulation or a high-risk gene therapy. Our team had to recommend a path forward.

It was one of the real business challenges we tackled in the UC Davis Graduate School of Management’s Biotechnology Industry Immersion, and it quickly showed us that understanding the science was only the beginning.

We entered the Industry Immersion with different perspectives on the life sciences. Gunraj Singh brought a background in neuroscience, health care operations and biotechnology strategy, while Bianca Aram brought more than four years of experience in biopharma research and development and clinical trials.

Although we understood our own areas of expertise, we had not yet fully appreciated how many decisions must align before a drug reaches a patient or how many different functions must work together to transform scientific innovation into real-world patient impact.

Learning to Think Like a Biotechnology Leader 

During the winter quarter, Hemant Vaidya, director of Biotechnology Industry Immersion, brought industry leaders into the classroom to give us an inside look at the challenges shaping biotechnology. His deep industry knowledge and genuine investment in his students created an environment where we felt comfortable questioning assumptions, considering different perspectives and pushing our thinking further.

Each case began with industry professionals introducing their company, sharing their experiences and walking us through a real business challenge they had faced. We then split into teams to analyze the problem, weigh the tradeoffs, develop a recommendation and present our solution to the class.

In the QIAGEN case, we had to choose.

As we debated the options, we quickly realized how much more went into the decision than the science. We had to consider financing, timing, operational capabilities, risk and long-term patient impact.

Our team ultimately proposed another path: Advance the reformulation internally while partnering the gene therapy with a company that had the capabilities and capital to move it forward. That case study captured one of the biggest lessons of the Biotechnology Industry Immersion. 

Scientific innovation may begin in the lab, but bringing it to patients requires leaders who understand how science, business and strategy fit together.

That perspective deepened as we evaluated investments, designed a rare disease portfolio and tackled other challenges throughout the immersion. Across every case, we learned that biotechnology is a continuous process of reducing risk without losing sight of why the work matters. A promising therapy has value only when a team can fund it, manufacture it reliably, navigate regulation, communicate its benefits and earn adoption.

One case captured the experience. We advised QIAGEN facing a patent cliff with capital to fund only one program: A safer late stage reformulation or a high risk gene therapy. 

Our team proposed a hybrid strategy, advance the reformulation internally while partnering the gene therapy with a company that had the right capabilities and capital. The discussion changed how we viewed leadership. The strongest answer was not simply the boldest or safest choice. It connected science, financing, timing, operational capabilities and long-term patient impact.

That perspective deepened as we evaluated investments, designed a rare disease portfolio and debated resources. Across every case, we learned that biotechnology is a continuous process of reducing risk without losing sight of why the work matters. A promising therapy has value only when a team can fund it, manufacture it reliably, navigate regulation, communicate its benefits and earn adoption.

Site Visits: Seeing Where We Fit in Biotech

Throughout the spring quarter, we visited biotechnology companies across California—Cepheid, Bionova Scientific, Genentech, Beckman Coulter and Danaher—and had the opportunity to hear directly from executives leading everything from commercial strategy to manufacturing. Seeing how these teams collaborate gave us a much broader perspective on how biotechnology companies operate and how many different disciplines work together to bring therapies to patients.

The most valuable part of the Industry Immersion, by far, was getting to hear the career stories of the executives we met. One conversation that really stood out to us was a fireside chat at Genentech.

Having the chance to ask a senior Genentech executive questions and hear candid answers made pursuing internships feel more approachable and introduced us to career paths we had not considered.

This Biotechnology Industry Immersion program truly reflects Vaidya's extraordinary dedication to his students. The relationships he has cultivated across California's biotechnology ecosystem create opportunities that extend far beyond traditional networking.  

It is evident how much time and care he invests in every aspect of the immersion—from coordinating company visits to ensuring students have meaningful interactions with industry leaders.  

The result is an experience that gave us a deeper understanding of the biotechnology industry and changed how we thought about our own careers.  

Coming into the Industry Immersion with little to no business experience, we discovered the many commercial roles involved in bringing therapies to patients, built lasting industry relationships and began to see where our own backgrounds and interests could fit.
