This inaugural UC Davis Data Summit marks five successful years of the UC Davis Master of Science in Business Analytics program. We’re bringing together students, alumni, practitioners and corporate leaders to spotlight key areas of analytics, offer skill-building Master Classes and share the latest about emerging trends.

Darin LaFramboise, Principal Product Manager at Auth0

Storytelling is how great data analysis persuades business decisions and drives growth across a company. Our keynote presenter, Darin LaFramboise, will share how he's used data stories to drive successful business decisions. LaFramboise will break down the key elements of a great story and how to translate large sums of data analysis into an engaging presentation for a wide audience. He is the principal product manager at Auth0, where he focuses on ecosystem products and multi-sided marketplace strategies. His previous roles include head of ecosystem strategy at Atlassian, and analytics lead for Sales Operations & Ads Platform at Facebook.

Partner Spotlight #1

Engage3: Leveraging data science and AI-powered software, Engage3 helps retailers and brands enhance their performance through localized competitive intelligence and optimized pricing strategies. The MSBA student teams worked closely with two Ph.D. data scientists on their important in-house demand forecasting model in both 2019 and 2020.

This talk will feature Engage3 Data Scientist, Dr. Sahar Pirmoradian who coached and mentored both student teams. Pirmoradian also worked closely with practicum professors, acting as a bridge for her firm and the school. Joining her will be Sridhar R Ramanujam, who was on the 2020 practicum team, and was subsequently hired by Engage3 as a Data Analyst after his graduation.

Partner Spotlight #2

Institute for Transportation Studies – UC Davis
ITS-Davis is the leading university center in the world on sustainable transportation, hosting the National Center on Sustainable Transportation since 2013 and managing major research initiatives on energy, environmental, and social issues. In 2018-2019, the UC Davis MSBA practicum team analyzed charging event data in collaboration with ITS-Davis researchers to design sustainable business models and capacity expansion strategies for charging station providers.

This talk will feature UC Davis MSBA 2019 graduate Chunjin “William” Gao.

10:45 - 10:55 a.m. 40 Practicums Over Four Years: What Makes For A Successful Industry Collaboration?

Professor Sanjay Saigal, Director of Analytics Strategy, Master of Science in Business Analytics

Over the last four years, more than 200 MSBA students have engaged with industry partners ranging from nonprofits and startups to banking behemoths, located as near as across the street and as far as the East Coast, on applications as diverse as technology innovation and cloud computing operations management. We briefly share the key success factors behind the highest impact of those 40-odd academia-industry engagements.

10:55 - 11:25 a.m. Natural Language Processing Master Class

Professor Jӧrn Boehnke

This session will introduce some of the common practices in Natural Language Processing (NLP), computational methods for understanding, generating and manipulating human language.  It will provide an overview of the field and how NLP is used today.

11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Marketing Analytics Master Class

As a data scientist, it is imperative for one to understand the business behind the analytics. The objective of this Master Class is to uncover the basics of performance marketing, how data analysts and scientist can go beyond AB testing to understand marketing funnels, goals, metrics and use that knowledge to optimize performance to achieve marketing goals.

  • How have analytics and data science teams fared during the pandemic?
  • What is the effectiveness in delivering impact while working from home?
  • What are gaps (in skills and others) that may have emerged in this new model of working?
  • What is the changing role of leaders and stakeholders in nurturing analyst and data scientist teams?
  • How we should plan for a post-pandemic potentially hybrid work environment?
