Academic Difficulty
Current Undergraduate Business Major Students
Students in the Graduate School of Management must meet academic and degree progress requirements to remain in good standing. Still, many encounter challenges along the way that may make it difficult to meet these expectations.
We know academic struggles can arise for many reasons—health, family circumstances, transitional challenges, course choices and more. Advisors in the Business Advising Office are here to support students, working with them toward academic recovery and the shared goal of graduating.

Academic Standing
Overview
Academic standing shows whether a student is meeting UC Davis requirements for grade point average (GPA) and degree progress, also called Minimum Progress. Standing is evaluated at the end of each regular quarter—fall, winter and spring—and recorded on the student’s academic record.
Students who meet both GPA and Minimum Progress requirements are in good standing. Students who do not meet one or both requirements are considered not in good standing. Each category has different levels, explained in detail below.
GPA Standing
To remain in good standing, students must maintain a C average (2.000) or higher both overall and in each quarter. If a student’s GPA falls below 2.000—either cumulatively or for a single term—they will be placed in a different standing, depending on their GPA and how many terms fall below the 2.000 minimum.
Academic Notice for GPA is defined by an overall or term GPA of 1.500 or higher, but below 2.000 (i.e. between 1.500 and 1.999).
Academic Notice Continued for GPA is defined by an overall or term GPA of 1.500 or higher, but below 2.000, (i.e. between 1.500 and 1.999) for two consecutive terms.
Subject to Disqualification for GPA can result from one or more of the following:
- An overall or term GPA below 1.500 (i.e. 1.499 or lower)
- Accumulating over 16 units of Incomplete "I" grades
- An overall or term GPA of 1.500 or higher, but below 2.000, for three consecutive terms
Minimum Progress Standing
To be in Good Standing for Minimum Progress (MP), students must maintain a Degree Progress Average (DPA) of at least 12 units passed per quarter over all quarters of full-time enrollment*. Students who end the quarter with Degree Progress Average (DPA) below 12 units will have one of the following standings based on the number of consecutive terms they have not met the requirement:
Academic Notice for MP: First term with a DPA below 12 units
Academic Notice Continued for MP: Second consecutive term with a DPA below 12 units
Academic Notice Continued for MP: Third consecutive term with a DPA below 12 units
Subject to Disqualification for MP: Fourth consecutive term with a DPA below 12 units
*Note: Quarters in which a student is officially enrolled for Part-Time status or in which they have an approved minimum progress waiver by the Student Disability Center (SDC) are excluded when determining Minimum Progress standing.
