Senior Director of Career Development

The Senior Director of Career Development oversees all aspects of placement, facilitates career opportunities, and champions corporate relations in the Graduate School of Management. This key leadership position creates an extensive program of engagement between the School and external constituencies to develop internship, career and other opportunities, prepares students for competitive MBA as well as masters-level positions, and encourages employers to hire UC Davis GSM graduates. We are seeking a visionary, innovative, and highly collaborative leader with the ability to develop staff, purposefully facilitate strategic outreach, shape organizational development, and prioritize a wide array of projects. The Senior Director serves as a member of the School of Management student affairs leadership team, and has additional student affairs and corporate relations responsibilities.

40% STRATEGIC PLANNING AND STAFF LEADERSHIP

  • The Sr Director of Career Development has strategic and staff leadership oversight over all MBA and Master of Management career staff and provides support to other masters program at the GSM including Master of Professional Accountancy and MS in Business Analytics.
  • Develop staff and lead team in executing a high-impact multi-year strategic and tactical plan to strengthen and expand professional opportunities and programming for GSM students to achieve highly competitive placement rates and salaries for internship and career roles.
  • Lead team in developing and delivering best-in-class career programming and relevant curriculum to prepare GSM students to maximize professional development ultimately leading to successful internship and full-time career position searches in a very competitive marketplace for management programs.
  • Ensure that UC Davis GSM 4C’s Principles (Curriculum, Careers, Community, Care) are integrated in the programming.
  • Forecast and target emerging opportunities for graduate management placement through analysis of industry trends and knowledge of GSM curriculum.
  • Benchmark GSM with other top business schools and employers, summarize and analyze data, and incorporate into GSM strategy and tactics as applicable.
  • Research, identify, select and implement tools, techniques and programs designed to prepare students for the job search.
  • Develop and monitor performance metrics for the Career Development program and staff to assess impact and effectiveness.
  • Direct and lead in preparing impactful regular placement reports, statistical analyses and summaries for Sr. Assistant Dean and GSM leadership, as well as ensure accurate data collection and reporting to meet reporting needs.
  • Ensure that career development communications, corporate relationship management, and events are designed to support the achievement of the GSM’s strategic goals.
  • Provide leadership in identifying and integrating opportunities to adapt to the diverse needs of students, and provide inclusive programming for the success of all students.

30% CORPORATE, ALUMNI AND PARTNERSHIP CULTIVATION

  • Work closely with the Dean, Assistant Deans and Corporate Relation team in the research, identification and cultivation of key corporate partners (including alumni) and develop and execute strategies to initiate and deepen the GSM’s relationship with them.
  • Nurture relationships to optimize for engagement and strong placement outcomes, as well as to understand evolving needs of the job market.
  • Develop selected strategic partnerships with Fortune 500, regional and startup companies that have high-value importance to the GSM by proactively engaging them in new ways, piloting new programs and modifying and building upon current models.
  • Activate and cultivate alumni base for program support.
  • Serve as an articulate spokesperson for the GSM to employers, students, staff and faculty, as well as throughout campus and the UC Davis community and beyond, in person and in writing.
  • Provide career development thought leadership in the higher education community. 

20% Operations

  • Manage all aspects of a fast-paced, technologically sophisticated career development center.
  • Provide career development thought leadership in the higher education community. 
  • Supervise staff, oversee operations, manage budget.
  • Coordinate and support corporate initiatives by teams of individuals, which may include the deans, students, faculty, staff, or volunteers.
  • Serve as a member of the Admissions Committee and coordinate with the Senior Director of Admissions on related matters.
  • Coordinate with University Internship & Career Center, Corporate Relations Office, and other UC Davis offices as needed.

10% Direct Student Support

  • Maintain a caseload of roughly 10% of FT MBAs to support them in their placement outcomes. 
  • Leverage insights for managing staff and creating new programming, as well as to guide partnerships with alumni and external partners.
  • Support Online MBA students at residentials on Ad Hoc basis.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master’s or other graduate degree in business, economics, international relations, HR, organizational behavior, counseling, STEM or other related majors.
  • Seven plus years of increasingly responsible experience, including staff management responsibilities, leading successful career development or recruiting teams in higher education or within a large complex institution.
  • A track record of strong career development placement outcomes for graduating college/university students, or corporate recruiting success leveraging nuanced knowledge of the career development profession and of issues and methods of placement in a business school or corporate setting.
  • Strong leadership, management, analytical and planning skills. Adept at initiating and execute complex programs and strategies and developing staff.
  • Empathic and effective leader, coach or mentor, adept at developing others.
  • Dynamic communicator with experience presenting to large groups of individuals, and connecting with senior corporate executives.
  • Skills to effectively interact with diverse constituencies and to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff work teams, other units of the campus, and outside organizations Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills and a high degree of professional ethics

Preferred Qualifications

  • 9+ years with director-level positions leading either graduate business career development teams or corporate recruiting experience with MBA hiring responsibilities, and possessing a track record of strong placement outcomes or performance against recruiting targets.
  • Advanced career counseling skills or staff development/mentorship experience equipping the selected candidate to serve as a model for staff in empathetically supporting students to maximize their professional development opportunities towards best in class career outcomes.
  • In depth knowledge of the corporate world and hiring needs from hiring timelines and best practices, ideal skills and attributes, and recruiting programs, timelines and requirements.  
  • Knowledge of the legal and technical aspects of employment and immigration law.

This position is fully on site, and based out of Davis. There is regular travel throughout the Sacramento and Bay Area to cultivate relationships with alumni and other employers and to attend events. Evening and weekend engagements are part of this role, as well as intermittent out of area travel. A valid driver’s license will be required for travel to employer/alumni visits and for events.
